How to Make Better Facial Expressions in Photos

"I have no idea what to do with my face."

That is OK.

I will guide you through your session & help you out with this, but if you want a little more confidence before coming into the studio, try these tips to nail your facial expressions. Even if you DON'T practice beforehand, I have taught hundreds of women how-to during their session . . . and they CRUSHED it. Let's show you how to make better facial expressions in your photos, so that you can up your selfie game as well as feel prepared for your photoshoot.

Follow these tips below

Practice in the mirror: Set aside some time to stand in front of a mirror and have fun experimenting with different expressions. Try out smiles, gentle smirks, serious looks, and everything in between. This playful exercise will help you become more in tune with how your facial muscles move and discover the expressions that feel most natural for you.

Focus on your eyes: Your eyes are like windows to your emotions. To create a sultry or confident look, focus on engaging your eyes. Think about something that genuinely makes you feel the way you want to express in the photo. Your eyes will naturally reflect those feelings, no acting required!

Stay Relaxed: Keep in mind that tension in your face can lead to less genuine expressions. Take a few deep breaths and consciously release any tension in your facial muscles. Sometimes, the most authentic and captivating expressions come when you're feeling at ease and not overthinking your pose. One thing I like to coach my clients with doing is relaxing jaw, and then breathing through lips, leaving a small opening between them.

Turn on your favorite music. Play music that evokes different moods and emotions. Allow the music to influence your expressions, changing them as the music does. Do this in front of the mirror and notice how you move, dance, and express with your face . . . see what you like and don't like. Practice changing expressions quickly: Have a partner call out emotions quickly, and you switch between them as fast as possible. This exercise helps you become more adaptable in expressing different emotions. Doing this really quickly will help you not overthink them.

P.S.

Practice these exercises while you do your hair in the morning. Incorporating these things into your routine will keep it relaxed & fun for you. Try to memorize your expressions.

Turn away from the mirror and then look back, and see if it is on point like it is when you are looking at yourself in the mirror. This will bring more awareness.
